The research team of Prof. Paterson found cryptographic technologies from the 90s. “We were surprised by the severity of the security vulnerabilities”.

In most cases, the researchers were able to gain access to the passwords – and even make changes to them.

Alda Mari … est une spécialiste de la sémantique formelle. « Cette discipline se concentre sur la manière dont le langage sert à décrire le monde, ou plutôt les mondes : le monde actuel et les mondes possibles », explique la chercheuse, reconnue pour ses travaux sur la distinction entre vérités objective et subjective.

« Il y a des conditions de vérité dans tout ce que l’on dit », souligne Alda Mari. Mais, tandis que la vérité objective est universelle et ne dépend pas du point de vue de l’observateur, celle qui est dite « subjective » varie en fonction des biais et de la perspective de celui-ci.

Pascale Senellart … directrice de recherche au Centre de nanosciences et de nanotechnologies s’appuie sur ces petits grains élémentaires de lumière ainsi que sur les « boîtes quantiques », des nanostructures capables de générer ces derniers sur commande. Avec son équipe, elle est parvenue à concevoir des sources qui émettent des photons uniques dans une direction précise.

… Dans un ordinateur classique, l’information est une succession de 0 et de 1. Mais le calculateur quantique utilise des qubits qui sont à la fois des 0 et des 1, dans un état dit « superposé ». Ce qui démultiplie la puissance de calcul.

Afin de commercialiser et mettre à disposition de la communauté scientifique les sources de photons uniques développées au C2N, la chercheuse et ses collègues Niccolo Somaschi et Valérian Giesz fondent en 2017 la start-up Quandela …

How does a person’s childhood socioeconomic status (SES) influence their chances to participate and succeed in science? To investigate this question, we use machine-learning methods to link scientists in a comprehensive biographical dictionary, the American Men of Science (1921), with their childhood home in the US Census and with publications. First, we show that children from low-SES homes were already severely underrepresented in the early 1900s. Second, we find that SES influences peer recognition, even conditional on participation: Scientists from high-SES families have 38% higher odds of becoming stars, controlling for age, publications, and disciplines. Using live-in servants as an alternative measure for SES confirms the strong link between childhood SES and becoming a star. Applying text analysis to assign scientists to disciplines, we find that mathematics is the only discipline in which SES influences stardom through the number and the quality of a scientist’s publications. Using detailed data on job titles to distinguish academic from industry scientists, we find that industry scientists have lower odds of being stars. Controlling for industry employment further strengthens the link between childhood SES and stardom. Elite undergraduate degrees explain more of the correlation between SES and stardom than any other control. At the same time, controls for birth order, family size, foreign-born parents, maternal education, patents, and connections with existing stars leave estimates unchanged, highlighting the importance of SES.

Work is fundamental to societal prosperity and mental health, providing financial security, identity, purpose, and social integration. The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has catalysed debate on job displacement. Some argue that many new jobs and industries will emerge to offset the displacement, while others foresee a widespread decoupling of economic productivity from human input threatening jobs on an unprecedented scale. This study explores the conditions under which both may be true and examines the potential for a self-reinforcing cycle of recessionary pressures that would necessitate sustained government intervention to maintain job security and economic stability. A system dynamics model was developed to undertake ex ante analysis of the effect of AI-capital deepening on labour underutilisation and demand in the economy. Results indicate that even a moderate increase in the AI-capital-to-labour ratio could increase labour underutilisation to double its current level, decrease per capita disposable income by 26% (95% interval, 20.6% - 31.8%), and decrease the consumption index by 21% (95% interval, 13.6% - 28.3%) by mid-2050. To prevent a reduction in per capita disposable income due to the estimated increase in underutilization, at least a 10.8-fold increase in the new job creation rate would be necessary. Results demonstrate the feasibility of an AI-capital- to-labour ratio threshold beyond which even high rates of new job creation cannot prevent declines in consumption. The precise threshold will vary across economies, emphasizing the urgent need for empirical research tailored to specific contexts. This study underscores the need for governments, civic organisations, and business to work together to ensure a smooth transition to an AI- dominated economy to safeguard the Mental Wealth of nations.

VPN adoption has seen steady growth over the past decade due to increased public awareness of privacy and surveillance threats. In response, certain governments are attempting to restrict VPN access by identifying connections using “dual use” DPI technology. To investigate the potential for VPN blocking, we develop mechanisms for accurately fingerprinting connections using OpenVPN, the most popular protocol for commercial VPN services. We identify three fingerprints based on protocol features such as byte pattern, packet size, and server response. Playing the role of an attacker who controls the network, we design a two-phase framework that performs passive fingerprinting and active probing in sequence. We evaluate our framework in partnership with a million-user ISP and find that we identify over 85% of OpenVPN flows with only negligible false positives, suggesting that OpenVPN-based services can be effectively blocked with little collateral damage. Although some commercial VPNs implement countermeasures to avoid detection, our framework successfully identified connections to 34 out of 41 “obfuscated” VPN configurations. We discuss the implications of the VPN fingerprintability for different threat models and propose short-term defenses. In the longer term, we urge commercial VPN providers to be more transparent about their obfuscation approaches and to adopt more principled detection countermeasures, such as those developed in censorship circumvention research.

The widespread use of Large Language Model (LLM)-based conversational agents (CAs), especially in high-stakes domains, raises many privacy concerns. Building ethical LLM-based CAs that respect user privacy requires an in-depth understanding of the privacy risks that concern users the most. However, existing research, primarily model-centered, does not provide insight into users’ perspectives. To bridge this gap, we analyzed sensitive disclosures in real-world ChatGPT conversations and conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 LLM-based CA users. We found that users are constantly faced with trade-offs between privacy, utility, and convenience when using LLM-based CAs. However, users’ erroneous mental models and the dark patterns in system design limited their awareness and comprehension of the privacy risks. Additionally, the human-like interactions encouraged more sensitive disclosures, which complicated users’ ability to navigate the trade-offs. We discuss practical design guidelines and the needs for paradigmatic shifts to protect the privacy of LLM-based CA users.

Is Your Wallet Snitching On You? An Analysis on the Privacy Implications of Web3
With the recent hype around the Metaverse and NFTs, Web3 is getting more and more popular. The goal of Web3 is to decentralize the web via decentralized applications. Wallets play a crucial role as they act as an interface between these applications and the user. Wallets such as MetaMask are being used by millions of users nowadays. Unfortunately, Web3 is often advertised as more secure and private. However, decentralized applications as well as wallets are based on traditional technologies, which are not designed with privacy of users in mind. In this paper, we analyze the privacy implications that Web3 technologies such as decentralized applications and wallets have on users. To this end, we build a framework that measures exposure of wallet information. First, we study whether information about installed wallets is being used to track users online. We analyze the top 100K websites and find evidence of 1,325 websites running scripts that probe whether users have wallets installed in their browser. Second, we measure whether decentralized applications and wallets leak the user’s unique wallet address to third-parties. We intercept the traffic of 616 decentralized applications and 100 wallets and find over 2000 leaks across 211 applications and more than 300 leaks across 13 wallets. Our study shows that Web3 poses a threat to users’ privacy and requires new designs towards more privacy-aware wallet architectures.

En 2021, un consortium international de médias révélait le scandale Pegasus : la surveillance illégale d’opposants, de journalistes ou de chefs d’État pratiquée par de nombreux pays via le logiciel israélien. Ce documentaire raconte les coulisses de l’enquête et expose les dérives mises au jour. Le 18 juillet 2021, dix-sept médias internationaux levaient le voile sur les dérives de Pegasus, l’un des logiciels espions les plus intrusifs au monde, créé par la société israélienne NSO Group. Présentée comme un outil de lutte contre le terrorisme et le crime organisé, cette arme informatique, capable de prendre le contrôle d’un téléphone en toute discrétion, a été utilisée par de nombreux États pour surveiller, à l’intérieur comme hors de leurs frontières, des responsables politiques, des journalistes, des avocats ou encore des militants des droits humains, mais aussi leurs contacts. Un an avant les révélations, Forbidden Stories accédait à une fuite de données contenant 50 000 numéros potentiellement visés entre 2016 et 2020. Avec le renfort de journalistes du Guardian, de Frontline et de quatorze autres rédactions, le collectif fondé par Laurent Richard se lançait alors dans une enquête tentaculaire pour identifier les personnes concernées et faire analyser leurs téléphones par des experts en sécurité informatique (Security Lab d’Amnesty International, Citizen Lab), afin d’y rechercher d’éventuelles traces d’infection. C’est ainsi que Diana Priest, du Washington Post, a pu établir que deux femmes proches de Jamal Khashoggi, son confrère saoudien assassiné à Istanbul – sur ordre probable du prince héritier Mohammed ben Salmane –, avaient été espionnées par Pegasus. Es handelt sich um eine der mächtigsten je entwickelten Spionagesoftwares der Welt, die von dem israelischen Unternehmen NSO Group entwickelt wurde. Die Spyware kann unbemerkt auf Smartphones zugreifen, ihren Nutzern übers Mikro zuhören und sie über die Kamera sogar beobachten. Laut Aussagen des Unternehmens wird die Software allein an Regierungen vertrieben, um sie bei der Bekämpfung von Kriminalität und Terrorismus zu unterstützen. Recent advancements in interpretability research made transformer language models more transparent. This progress led to a better understanding of their inner workings for toy and naturally occurring models. However, how these models internally process sentiment changes has yet to be sufficiently answered. In this work, we introduce a new interpretability tool called PCP ablation, where we replace modules with low-rank matrices based on the principal components of their activations, reducing model parameters and their behavior to essentials. We demonstrate PCP ablations on MLP and attention layers in backdoored toy, backdoored large, and naturally occurring models. We determine MLPs as most important for the backdoor mechanism and use this knowledge to remove, insert, and modify backdoor mechanisms with engineered replacements via PCP ablation.

Key Overwriting (KO) attacks might be possible if #adversary has write access to the #encrypted private key of the #victim such as with GopenPGP or OpenPGP.js libraries in applications like #ProtonMail #FlowCrypt (#GMail etc.) and if victim does not inspect their own (!) key #fingerprint before using the key.

KO: public key material stored as part of the secret key packet is in cleartext […] #KO #attacks might recover the private parameters when the corrupted key is used for either signing or decrypting […] so-called “faulty signatures”, which can allow private key reconstruction.

Countermeasures for developers/OpenPGP standard: (1) avoid #KOKV attacks by OpenPGP specification not leaving the task of confirming key #integrity to individual #implementations. (2) Use an #AEAD scheme (3). Deprecating #ElGamal encryption option in OpenPGP spec.

In den News per Mail wurde bisher unter anderem der berühmte oder weniger berühmte jährliche Newsletter mit Jahresrückblick veröffentlicht. Nun wurde erstmals versuchsweise eine subjektive Auswahl einiger Themen kommentiert und (nur) als E-Mail-Newsletter verschickt, da dies einfacher war.

Künftig sind sporadische, jedoch kaum monatliche Newsletter mit kommentierten Nachrichten vorgesehen. Voraussichtlich werden Themen-Anrisse wie dieser Beitrag veröffentlicht, zu denen es wie bisher weitere Ausführungen per E-Mail gibt.
